Open PhD position at Free University of Bozen/Bolzano, Faculty of Science and Technology

The Free University of Bozen/Bolzano welcomes the opportunity to support a PhD position in hydrology within the PhD programme in Sustainable Energy and Technologies of the Faculty of Science and Technology. The PhD position is designated within the water resources management and optimization framework. The proposed research topics deal with hydrological modeling and forecasting aiming to support the efficient use of water resources in a complex environment such as the Alpine area.

During the past  years, the Free University of Bozen/Bolzano has invested in this research field by opening several PhD as well as researchers’ positions dedicated to addressing scientific questions concerning water resources management and modeling. The PhD candidate is expected to work within this framework, as well to introduce his/her own innovative ideas.
Currently the existing research group is focused on several topics: hydrological modelling of snow-dominated catchments, Data Assimilation, coupling of ensemble-based meteorological forecasts with hydrological models, uncertainty analysis and hydro-economic modeling for hydropower production.

Ongoing joint research is performed with several academic national and international partners as well as with local institutions (multi-utility companies, public administration and private research centers). Currently, among  other activities, there is ongoing collaboration with the universities of Trento and Padua in Italy, WSL (Switzerland) and NERSC (Norway).
All the above-mentioned topics converge towards the development of tools and instruments able to support end-users concerning, for instance, hydropower optimization and natural hazard planning strategies.

A PhD candidate with good programming skills and a hydrologic/hydraulic background, willing to work in this applied research field is more than welcome!
