Assegno di ricerca - Genova

The Department of Civil, Chemical and Environmental Engineering (DICCA) at University of Genoa, Italy, is seeking a dynamic and motivated Post-Doctoral student to collaborate on the project PNRR - MUR – M4C2 – Investimento 1.5 - Avviso “Ecosistemi dell’Innovazione” – Ecosistema dell’Innovazione ECS00000035 “RAISE (Robotics and AI for Socio-economic Empowerment)” funded by the Italian Ministry of Research.

Title: Now- and Fore-cast of meteocean conditions through numerical models, observation and machine learning

Description

In the framework of the PNRR MUR project - M4C2 - Investment 1.5 - Notice "Ecosystems of Innovation" - RAISE (Robotics and AI for Socio-economic Empowerment) - Spoke 4, the development of Machine Learning algorithms for the very short term (nowcast) and short term (forecast) forecasting of weather and sea conditions in the vicinity of main Ligurian ports (Savona, Genoa, La Spezia) is planned.

The research activities thus involve

  • the installation and deployment of instrumentation dedicated to the measurement of environmental meteorological quantities such as currents, waves, and wind
  • the post-processing of the measured data
  • the integration of the measures with data from numerical models developed and maintained by DICCA on the AWS platform (http://www3. dicca.unige.it/meteocean/)
  • the development of Machine Learning algorithms for the management of time series in order to produce very short and short-term forecasts employing the data reconstructed from the numerical models (hindcast) and the data observed from the instrumentation made available by the project. The activities will be developed and implemented through close collaboration between DICCA and the research center MALGA (Machine Learning Genoa Center - https://malga.unige.it/).

The grant winner will be involved in research and development activities at both DICCA and MALGA.

The successful candidate will have a strong engineering and/or coastal oceanography background, skills in coding (e.g. C++, FORTRAN, Python, Julia, MatLab, R), geo-data software (NCO, CDO, wgrib), knowledge of
UNIX/Linux operating systems and script languages, and a desire to work on Machine Learning applied to ocean dynamics. Fluent spoken and written English, as well as good communication skills are required. The project will be supervised by Prof. Giovanni Besio.

The conditions of the scholarship will match the University of Genoa Post-Doctoral rules, and will provide funding for one year, eventually renewable for another year depending on the scholar performances, with a net salary of about 1700 €/month (social security included). Medical care is assured by the national health care system.
