2 PostDoc positions - new methods/technologies for peatland studies

Project description: The CHANGED project aims at developing and applying a new multisensory approach from Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to improve our ability of mapping peatlands in 3D and assessing the carbon stored over large territories at high spatial resolution and low costs. The project aims at integrating data collected from UAVs with data collected in the field on peatland geomorphological features, hydrological conditions, soil and vegetation properties, and electrical conductivities, for a comprehensive eco-geomorphic characterization of peatlands. Data collected from UAVs include LiDAR data, hyperspectral data collected in the visible, near- and mid-infrared, and geophysical data.

Within this framework, we announce the availability of 2 post-doc positions (18 months each):

1) the Post-doc researcher will mainly work at (i) the organization of UAVs surveys, including a preparatory activity for adapting the sensors to the transportation with UAVs, (ii) integration and calibration of multiple sensor systems (LiDAR-hyperspectral-navigation system and geophysical systems) (iii) the collection of LiDAR-hyperspectral-geophysical and field calibration data, (iv) the data analyses.The Post-doc will collaborate with others at the final interpretation of the results in a more comprehensive eco-geomorphic framework. The candidate will mainly work at the TESAF department and at the CIRGEO research center (University of Padova), but the program will include periods at other locations (University of Cagliari and field sites on the Alps). Background: PhD in one of the following fields: Engineering, Hydrology, Geology, Geophysics, Physics, Remotely Sensed Earth Observation, Environmental Sciences. Experience in using UAV systems. Experience in analyzing satellite, LiDAR and geophysical data. Proven research experience in scientific publications. Experience with programming and data-processing applications such as Matlab/Python, R, or other. Good written and oral communication skills in English.

2) the Post-doc researcher will mainly work at (i) collection of field measurements on the hydrology and the characteristics of vegetation (i.e. percentage cover and density), (ii) soil and vegetation sampling, and (iii) lab analyses for carbon and vegetation biomass retrieval. The Post-doc will collaborate with others at the organization of UAVs surveys, data analyses and final interpretation of the results in a more comprehensive eco-geomorphic framework. The candidate will mainly work at the CIRSA center, Ravenna Campus (University of Bologna), but the program will include periods at other locations (University of Padova and field sites on the Alps). Background: PhD in one of the following fields: Environmental Engineering, Hydrology, Biology, Natural Sciences, Geology, Physics, Remotely Sensed Earth Observation, Environmental Sciences. Experience in performing field surveys for environmental studies and laboratory analyses. Interest in analyzing satellite, LiDAR and geophysical data. Proven research experience in scientific publications. Experience with data-processing applications such as Matlab/Python, R, or other. Good written and oral communication skills in English.

The 2 post-doc associates will collaborate with each other and with the PI Sonia Silvestri (University of Bologna), prof. Antonio Vettore and  prof. Matteo Massironi (University of Padova) and prof. Giulio Vignoli (University of Cagliari).
